Whenever the Dead played Oregon, it was ON (usually). This show has certainly helped me along in becoming more of an '82 head, and with good reason. The first set is pretty nice, I really like the Althea and the China > Rider. The second set just blows me away and reminds me that the magic wasn't at all lost by this point. I wasn't really a West LA Fadeaway fan until I heard this one, and the Black Peter and Dupree's sound great as well. The whole thing seems to miraculously hold that same Prankster/Family vibe that I hear in recordings like 5/31/69 and 8/27/72. Hot damn!

Really liked your post; definitely praiseworthy prose. An excellent encapsulation of an underrated show, with just the right personal touch. Thanks for the highlights of the show and a fine geographically specific insight reminding me of the Pranksters' ongoing presence in the Eugene area throughout the Dead's career. I really dig McArthur Court 8/16/81 for the very Prankster/Family vibe to which you allude. Thanks again.

Best,

I was at that show. I love it now, but at the time I was a bit disappointed. Expectations were running high for something really special songwise for that anniversary show.

In hindsight the playing is excellent. I love the China/Rider. Good China/Riders that month. 8/7/82 is another favorite version.

Being an Oregonian, I have to agree with you and the vibe that was unique to our shows. The boys were ON in Aug 82. Thanks for the anniversary reminder. This is going on the stereo tonight.
